The Starting Poker Hands That Should Be Played

This will be an article that explains the texas holdem poker hands that should be played. This is because there are 169 possible starting poker hands in Texas Holdem but more than half are unplayable.

This is important to learn because knowing what poker hands to fold is what separates the experienced players from the 'fish'. To be able to make money at poker one should know what string poker hands are playable.

Below will be starting poker hands that have a 10% chance of winning a game with 10 players in Texas Holdem.

Legend: A = Ace; K = King; Q = Queen; J = Jack; T = Ten; 2-9 = face value; x = unknown card and s = same suit.

• Any pair is playable. You will have better odds when you have higher pairs.

• Ax, Kx, Qx, Jx, 10x suited. If you have any of these cards you will have a potential for high pairs, 3 of a kind, straight, flush, or straight flush. AKs up to A2s; KQs up to K2s; QJs up to Q3s; JTs up to J5s; T9s up to T6s

• Ax, Kx, Qx, Jx, 10x all have the potential for high pairs or straights. Do play a pair of unsuited poker hands that have combined value of 21 or higher. AK, AQ, AJ, AT, A9, KQ, KJ, K10, K9, QJ, QT, Q9 and JT.

• 9x poker hands and other lower suited - these poker hands are called poker connectors. These are two suited cards that are consecutive or have one number between them only. They have the potential to be a flush or a straight. 9-8s; 9-7s; 9-6s; 8-7s; 8-6s; 8-5s; 7-6s; 7-5s; 6-5s; 6-4s; 5-4s; 5-3s; 4-3s

Any poker starting hand not mentioned above should be folded. Do expect that you will fold the majority of the time. If you play with other poker hands not mentioned above you'll be against the mathematical odds. Therefore making you lose in the long run.

One more important thing to remember is to play poker hands differently depending on your position. This is because if you are the last player to do so you get to see or predict what other previous player's cards might be.

It's ok to commit occasional mistakes when learning to play the right poker hands. Everyone even the tournament champions had to learn the long way. With a little practice you may get to win that elusive pot sooner rather than later.
